It looks like the Nintendo NX will be a console and handheld hybrid

Could we be getting our wish?

As we speculated back in August, a report released today in the Wall Street Journal suggests that the new Nintendo NX console is likely to be both a console and a handheld.

“The exact shape of the NX hardware isn’t yet clear. People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities didn’t match those of competitors.”

We’ve been waiting for some definite news on the NX since it was announced all the way back in March, being hailed as “a new hardware system with a brand-new concept.” With this report it looks like that’s exactly what we’re getting.

In addition to this, The Wall Street Journal reported that Nintendo are beginning to distribute development kits for the NX which points towards the possibility of a 2016 release date for the new console. We did wonder after their lacklustre E3 presentation, and the Dragon Quest 2016 release announcement, whether Nintendo were working harder on the NX than we realised. If the Wall Street Journal is correct, apparently they were and we shouldn’t be surprised that Nintendo want to get developers working on the hardware as soon as possible.

Nintendo are keeping quite quiet when it comes to details right now, but we don’t think it’ll be too late into 2016 before we hear more.
