If you love Thor, Game of Thrones, or Vikings on the History channel, we’ve got some news you might just be interested in. The Banner Saga is coming to consoles. If you haven’t heard of The Banner Saga before, it’s basically a Viking RPG with elements of Norse mythology. The Banner Saga was initially launched on PC, iOS and Android, but, like the actual Vikings, it’s not content with its limited space and has decided the time is right to invade other platforms.
The Banner Saga is a single player game from a team of developers who worked together on Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic in which players fight to save their people against the colossal armour-clad Dredge and themselves from political intrigue. In the game, a player’s choice in travel, conversation and combat determines the outcome of their own personal story as well as the survival of an entire civilization. The game is worth playing for its story alone (which isn’t surprising considering there are former Bioware developers behind it) but it’s got so much more to offer besides. The original score from Austin Wintory is wonderful and, something that will always draw me into a game, the 2D animation and art style is absolutely gorgeous.
John Watson, founder and technical director at Stoic Studios said that although porting the game to console “certainly presented technical challenges” they’ve taken the opportunity to redesign player experience with the console controller in mind and they’ve “managed to merge the story and gameplay from Banner Saga with a refined controller interface to make it a very enjoyable console gaming experience.”
Considering this, and the fact that the original game has won several awards and received 3 BAFTA nominations, I think it’s safe to say this is a game on which you should keep a weather eye.The Banner Saga will be released on Playstation 4 and Xbox One on January 12th 2016.
