There’s a new game from the creator of Flappy Bird

As you'd expect, it's addictive and infuriating

If you’re looking for a game to pass the time as you journey home for Christmas, or to play under the cover of the dinner table when the conversation slides towards the question “so, what are you really doing with your life?” Dong Nguyen, the creator of Flappy Bird, has a brand new offering called Swing Copters 2.

Nguyen’s game Flappy Bird was a massive success in 2013 before he pulled it from App stores, but he returned to the gaming world last year with Swing Copters. Swing Copters was just as simple as in terms of its one-touch gameplay mechanics as Flappy Birds, but the game itself was marginally more difficult. Now its sequel, Swing Copters 2 is no different.

Swing Copters 2 retains the attractive Nintendo-esque pixel-art style of previous games from Dotgears, and it still has that incredibly simple user interface that keeps the game simple but somehow makes it even more infuriating when everything goes wrong. Like the original Swing Copters, the sequel has you controlling a cute character sporting a heli-hat. The aim is simple: tap the sides of the screen to help him change directions mid-flight and avoid hammers that are swinging everywhere. One hit is enough to kill you which is, of course, immensely frustrating but the fact that there are basically no loading screens and you can go immediately back into playing means that this is the ultimate ‘one more go’ game.

Swing Copters 2 also has multiple characters to choose from (they’re all adorable, of course) and you can even visit the Swing Copters site where you’ll find descriptions of their personalities and relationships and understand that they’re having to face the hurdles of adulthood and get real jobs. Well, isn’t that relateable and a weird attempt at depth in a free mobile game.

Swing Copters 2 is the perfect game to hold your attention when you’ve got a long journey to go on or you need to block out the world for a while. It’s absolutely not a game to pass five minutes, because that five minutes will inevitably turn into fifty five and a need for a strong drink.

You can download the game free for iOS and Android now.
