If you’ve ever had to stay in a hotel in a large city, you’ve probably noticed that they’re willing to offer you many luxuries at an additional cost and one of these luxuries that certainly doesn’t come cheap is extra space. This wouldn’t be so bad if it was just you in the room but it never is – your luggage is there too. Or worse, another person and their luggage on top of that. More than once I’ve walked into a hotel room, unpacked my suitcase and found it might as well have its own side of the bed considering the lack of storage space available.
London-based luggage brand Neit (pronounced ‘neat’) have piqued our interest by creating a smart suitcase that could make storage less of an issue. The hard-shell suitcase features a unique patent-pending collapsing mechanism which reduces the depth of the case to three inches in under ten seconds, making it easy to slide away when not in use. It also has a carabiner-style handle if you’d rather hang it up.
As well as being collapsible, the case comes with a host of smart features such as a built-in GPS tracker which connects to the Neit travel app so you can always know where your belongings are. The travel app is compatible with iOS and Android devices, storing flight and hotel details, map routes, and useful travel tips as well as the location of your luggage.
Despite being easy to fold away, Neit are keen to emphasise that their luggage is not flimsy, claiming the design is inspired by the armadillo shell. Made from a lightweight and durable polycarbonate with an aluminium frame and YKK waterproof Aquaseal zippers, the luggage should be able to take a beating in all weather conditions.
Update: August 2016
After raising over £80,000 on Kickstarter, Neit is available now. The RRP is £245 for cabin/carry on, £345 for checked/main suitcase and £485 for both, but if you’re lucky you might be just in time to snag them in the early bird sale, where they currently have pretty big discounts. Shop here.
