Reebok’s Ripley boots for Alien Day were “Men Classics” in sizes 8-12

In space, no one can hear you sigh

Yesterday was Alien Day, celebrating the classic 1979 sci-fi horror that brought badass Ellen Ripley into our lives. Ripley wasn’t added to the film for decoration or to be saved; she’s a competent hero and literally the toughest survivor in the film. We love Ripley, great films, and geeky fashion, so we get excited about special releases such as Ripley’s watch from Aliens or the replicas of Ripley’s boots.

Alien Day came and went and the small run (426 worldwide, in honour of Alien’s planet LV426) of the Reebok Alien Stompers quickly sold out. For some people, the disappointment will come from arriving too late and missing out on the tiny number available. But for others, they got there in time only to find the boots under Reebok’s “Men Classics” section of the website and in sizes 8-12. Men and women come in all shapes and sizes of course, but the women’s average is around that minimum.

It’s a shame when any cool product doesn’t help most women but it’s worse when it’s inspired by a movie character considered by many to be a feminist icon. Obviously there was a Twitter outrage from women who wanted to rock their own Ripley boots or cosplay as their favourite character.

Gizmodo received a statement that “The Alien Stompers were released in men’s sizes due to retail demand.” But since then, another statement has been sent out that claims the listing as men’s rather than unisex was a mistake and that they were available from sizes 3.5. The thing is, the website only offered sizes 8-12 and we haven’t been able to find anyone who bought sizes smaller than that. As you can probably imagine, plenty of the purchases ended up on eBay to make a quick profit and none of them are below the US 8-12 sizes either. If they really did make unisex shoes for everyone, where are they?

We know someone who wouldn’t stand for this.
